Jewish Life in the Kraichgau – a special Map

Umschlagseite der Karte2006 and 2007 groups of pupils from four different schools – the Realschule Waibstadt, the Wilhelmi-Gymnasium Sinsheim, the Adolf-Schmitthenner-Gymasium Neckarbischofsheim and the Hartmanni-Gymnasium Eppingen – collected data and information on the life of Jewish inhabitants in the Kraichgau.

From this a map with an added brochure was produced in 2008 by students of the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien in Heidelberg and the pupils.

This topic map of Jewish Kraichgau presents a new chapter of Jewish regional history in a landscape steeped in tradidion. Until 1938 the majority of the Jewish communities of Baden were located in the Kraichgau, where they have been mentioned already during the middle Ages.

Already a single glance provides an impression of the richness of Jewish life in the Kraichgaus, since all Jewish remains of the region are shown. To find the Jewish institutions there are detailed plans of several places on the back of the map. The brochure gives detailed information on the former Jewish communities and lists opening times and contact addresses for several cultural monuments. The text is in English and German to facilitate the use for a wider audience.

The production of the map has been financed by a grant from our organization.
